The severity of sleep hypoventilation in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Summary: The study compared COPD patients with sleep hypoventilation (SH), those with brief PaCO2 increases during sleep (shamSH), and those without hypoventilation (noSH). Results showed that SH and shamSH patients had higher CO2 load, indicating more severe hypoventilation in SH patients. This suggests that SH and shamSH patients may represent distinct groups of true hypoventilators during sleep.
