Chicken-sourceEscherichia coliwithin phylogroup F shares virulence genotypes and is closely related to extraintestinal pathogenicE. colicausing human infections

Xiangkai Zhuge et al.

Summary: Chicken-source E. coli isolates within phylogroup F in China showed high prevalence of virulence-related genes, stable population structure, and strong biofilm formation, swimming, and swarming abilities. The research revealed the potential zoonotic transmission and association with human ExPEC pathotypes, indicating a potential high-risk food-borne pathogen.

Diversity of Escherichia coli strains isolated from day-old broiler chicks, their environment and colibacillosis lesions in 80 flocks in France

Sabine Delannoy et al.

Summary: This study conducted on 80 broiler flocks revealed a huge diversity among avian E. coli isolated from diseased and non diseased birds. Pathogenic E. coli strains causing colibacillosis in broilers varied in genetic profiles and were distributed across different origins. Some isolates obtained from birds infected by different pathogenic E. coli strains showed differences in genetic profiles.

New strategies to prevent and control avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC)

Henrik Christensen et al.

Summary: This review presents the risks associated with APEC and highlights the new strategy for controlling APEC, including limiting vertical transmission, using all-in-all-out production systems, and implementing biosecurity measures. Vaccination and competitive exclusion are important tools, while culling strategies can reduce antibiotic-resistant APEC. Strategies to reduce APEC, including antibiotic-resistant APEC, need to be implemented in the whole production pyramid, starting at the very top.

Summary: A series of studies were conducted in specific-pathogen-free white leghorn chickens to develop a chicken model of avian pathogenic Escherichia coli (APEC) peritonitis and evaluate the effectiveness of a siderophore receptor and porin proteins (SRP (R)) APEC vaccine. The vaccine demonstrated dramatic effectiveness in protecting against mortality, tissue colonization, and pathology typical of APEC infections in both young and mature chickens under flexible conditions of use in commercial operations.
