Evaluation of three sample preparation methods for the identification of clinical strains by using two MALDI-TOF MS systems

Jinghua Wang et al.

Summary: Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has revolutionized microbial identification, especially in clinical microbiology laboratories. This study evaluated the performance of three sample preparation methods on two different MALDI-TOF MS systems and found that the on-target extraction method (OTEM) was more suitable and necessary for clinical application due to its key advantages of simplicity and accuracy. The study showed that different preparation methods can significantly impact microbial protein fingerprints.
