Cryogenic 3D printing of dual-delivery scaffolds for improved bone regeneration with enhanced vascularization

Chong Wang et al.

Summary: 3D printing is increasingly used to create advanced bone tissue engineering scaffolds with biomimetic structures and matched mechanical strengths for improved bone regeneration. Customized scaffolds were produced using cryogenic 3D printing of beta-tricalcium phosphate and osteogenic peptide inks, and coated with angiogenic peptide hydrogel to enhance vascularization. The scaffolds had a hierarchically porous structure similar to human cancellous bone and showed high viability for both endothelial cells and mesenchymal stem cells. Improved in vitro migration and angiogenesis were observed for scaffolds with angiogenic peptide, while enhanced osteogenic differentiation was seen in scaffolds containing osteogenic peptide. In vivo, scaffolds with both peptides showed increased angiogenesis and new bone formation.

Bioinspired mineralized collagen scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

Zhengwei Li et al.

Summary: This article thoroughly summarizes the state of the art of mineralized collagen scaffolds (MCSs) as tissue-engineered scaffolds for bone repair, including fabrication methods, critical factors for osteogenesis regulation, and opportunities and challenges for the future. The review discusses current fabrication methods for MCSs to improve their biomimetic physical structures, as well as the physical, biological, and chemical cues as critical factors for regulating the osteogenic feature of MCSs. Opportunities and challenges associated with MCSs as bone tissue-engineered scaffolds are also discussed to point out future directions for building the next generation of MCSs with satisfactorily mimetic structures and appropriate biological characters for bone regeneration.

Bacterial cellulose/glycolic acid/glycerol composite membrane as a system to deliver glycolic acid for anti-aging treatment

Bricard Mbituyimana et al.

Summary: This study presents a topical controlled drug delivery system based on bacterial cellulose membrane, glycolic acid, and glycerol to reduce the side effects of glycolic acid on the skin while maintaining its prolonged therapeutic effect. The results demonstrate that the incorporation of glycerol increases the malleability and flexibility of the membrane, leading to a slower release of glycolic acid. Moreover, the composite membrane effectively stimulates endogenous collagen synthesis and promotes long-term cell adhesion, spreading, and proliferation.
