Livestock production and income inequality in rural Vietnam

Truong Lam Do et al.

Summary: Livestock production can either positively or negatively impact income inequality, with positive livestock income significantly reducing rural income inequality and further improvements possible by reducing negative livestock income. Prioritizing the development of large livestock and implementing measures to enhance access to credit, promote rural education and infrastructure, and empower rural households to cope with demographic shocks are suggested to improve income equality.

Summary: The study indicates that land rental markets can improve agricultural efficiency, but the poor do not significantly benefit from them. Further analysis could focus on efficiency thresholds for farmers transitioning between different market regimes.

Environmental income and remittances: Evidence from rural central highlands of Vietnam

Sina Bierkamp et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between environmental resource extraction and migration as livelihood strategies in rural households in developing countries. The findings reveal differences in the effects of remittances on asset-poor and asset-rich households, with the former being more reliant on labour-intensive strategies and the latter showing increased natural resource extraction due to remittances. The study supports the need for encouraging rural labour markets and education, especially for asset-poor individuals, and advocating for sustainable and collective natural resource management.
