Phytotoxic Effects of Plant Essential Oils: A Systematic Review and Structure-Activity Relationship Based on Chemometric Analyses

Ahmed M. Abd-ElGawad et al.

Summary: This review discusses the phytotoxic essential oils (EOs) and their chemical compositions reported from 1972 to 2020, highlighting the importance of oxygenated terpenes, mono- and sesquiterpenes in the phytotoxicity of EOs. Monoterpenes such as pinene, 1,8 cineole, linalool, and carvacrol, as well as sesquiterpenes like caryophyllene and its derivatives, are identified as key components in the phytotoxicity of EOs. Further studies are recommended to evaluate the pure form activities, determine field application, assess safety, and understand modes of action for these compounds.

Phytotoxic Potential and Phenolic Profile of Extracts from Scrophularia striata

Seyyed Sasan Mousavi et al.

Summary: Many plants produce allelochemicals that can inhibit the germination of competitive species, with phenolic compounds being common mediators. Extracts from Scrophularia striata plants showed inhibitory effects on the seed germination of both crops and weeds, with the degree of inhibition depending on the plant species, origin, and extract concentration. Hydroalcoholic extracts, especially from the Pahleh ecotype, exhibited higher phytotoxicity against the studied species.

Allelopathic Potential of Haloxylon persicum against Wheat and Black Mustard with Special Reference to Its Phytochemical Composition and Antioxidant Activity

Ibrahim Bayoumi Abdel-Farid et al.

Summary: The study found that low and moderate concentrations of H. persicum aqueous extract did not significantly affect the growth of wheat seedlings, while the highest concentration had a significant impact. Additionally, the extract had an impact on the chlorophyll content and proline content of wheat seedlings.
