Genetic sexing strains for the population suppression of the mosquito vector Aedes aegypti

Panagiota Koskinioti et al.

Summary: Aedes aegypti is the primary vector of arthropod-borne viruses such as dengue, chikungunya and Zika, and controlling vector populations is crucial for impeding disease transmission. This study constructed two genetic sexing strains using red- and white-eye color mutations, with the red-eye strain showing better genetic stability. Introducing an irradiation-induced inversion (Inv35) increased genetic stability and reduced female contamination in male release batches, leading to the suppression of mosquito populations within weeks.
