Changes in the human footprint in and around Indonesia's terrestrial national parks between 2012 and 2017

Asri A. Dwiyahreni et al.

Summary: The human footprint (HF) is a measure of the impact of human activities on the environment, and has been found to be closely related to the vulnerability of protected areas worldwide. In Indonesia, where nature conservation is sometimes viewed as hindering economic development, assessing the human footprint is crucial to understand the overall pressure on national parks. This study measured changes in the human footprint in and around 43 terrestrial national parks over a 5-year period, showing an increase in 37 out of 43 parks, with factors such as increasing human population density and improved access to parks driving the impacts.
