Lymphopenia an important immunological abnormality in patients with COVID-19: Possible mechanisms

Abdollah Jafarzadeh et al.

Summary: Lymphopenia, a major immunological abnormality in COVID-19 patients, is strongly associated with mortality rate. The reduction of lymphocytes may be caused by both SARS-CoV-2- and immune-mediated mechanisms, as well as metabolic and biochemical changes in patients. Preventing lymphopenia could potentially help improve patient outcomes.

Summary: The study indicates that patients with lymphopenia who develop pneumonia have an increased risk of death. Lower lymphocyte count is consistently associated with higher mortality risk in cases of primary care pneumonia.
