Chromosomal Analysis in Crotophaga ani (Aves, Cuculiformes) Reveals Extensive Genomic Reorganization and an Unusual Z-Autosome Robertsonian Translocation

Rafael Kretschmer et al.

Summary: The study found extensive chromosome reorganization in the smooth-billed ani, including interchromosomal rearrangements involving macro and microchromosomes. Intrachromosomal rearrangements were also observed in some macrochromosomes, with the most notable finding being a rare event of Robertsonian translocation between microchromosome 17 and the Z chromosome.

Comparative Mapping of the Macrochromosomes of Eight Avian Species Provides Further Insight into Their Phylogenetic Relationships and Avian Karyotype Evolution

Lucas G. Kiazim et al.

Summary: This study used a universally hybridizing probe set to investigate the macrochromosomes of eight bird species, building comparative cytogenetic maps and reconstructing a putative Neognathae ancestor. Results showed that the chicken has a karyotype most similar to the ancestor, but there was no increased rate of intrachromosomal change in Passeriformes as previously reported.

Cytotaxonomy of Gallinula melanops (Gruiformes, Rallidae): Karyotype evolution and phylogenetic inference

Ivanete de Oliveira Furo et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the karyotype of Gallinula melanops using classical and molecular cytogenetics, revealing chromosome rearrangements similar to those found in the Fulica clade, including fissions of chromosomes 4 and 5 and fusions between GGA4/GGA5 segments. This confirms the placement of G. melanops in the Gallinula genus despite suggestions to include it in the Porphyriops genus.

Analysis of multiple chromosomal rearrangements in the genome of Willisornis vidua using BAC-FISH and chromosome painting on a supposed conserved karyotype

Talita Fernanda Augusto Ribas et al.

Summary: Thamnophilidae birds are a diverse group of insectivorous Passeriformes with 225 species and 45 genera, mainly found in lowlands and lower montane forests of Neotropics. Despite the large degree of diversity, only a few species have been karyotyped. Recent studies have shown the occurrence of intrachromosomal rearrangements in birds, which may contribute to speciation events.
