Safety and Efficacy of Starting Antiretroviral Therapy in the First Week of Life

Summary: Early initiation of NVP/ZDV/3TC in the first week of life was found to be safe and effective for HIV-infected infants. Although NVP trough concentrations were often below target levels, most children achieved and maintained viral suppression by 12 to 24 weeks, despite transient viral increases following transition to LPV/r.
