Analgesic Effect of Intraoperative Intravenous S-Ketamine in Opioid-Naive Patients After Major Lumbar Fusion Surgery Is Temporary and Not Dose-Dependent: A Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial

Elina C. Brinck et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of different doses of S-ketamine with a placebo on postoperative analgesic consumption, pain, and adverse events in adult, opioid-naive patients after lumbar fusion surgery. The results showed that neither dose of intraoperative IV S-ketamine was superior to the placebo in reducing oxycodone consumption at 48 hours post-surgery. Ketamine treatment did lead to significantly lower pain scores at the fourth postoperative hour, but not later in the study period.

Prediction of Persistent Pain Severity and Impact 12 Months After Breast Surgery Using Comprehensive Preoperative Assessment of Biopsychosocial Pain Modulators

Kristin L. Schreiber et al.

Summary: A comprehensive assessment of preoperative, postoperative, and surgical area pain in breast surgery patients identified consistent predictors of persistent pain outcomes, including preoperative pain, education level, somatization, and sleep disturbance. This may inform personalized prevention strategies for persistent post-mastectomy pain and guide future research efforts.

Dexmedetomidine for prevention of postoperative delirium in older adults undergoing oesophagectomy with total intravenous anaesthesia A double-blind, randomised clinical trial

Jun Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the efficacy and safety of dexmedetomidine in reducing postoperative delirium (POD) in elderly patients after transthoracic oesophagectomy. The results showed that dexmedetomidine reduced the incidence of POD and emergence agitation, while also decreasing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6. Overall, adding peri-operative dexmedetomidine to total intravenous anaesthesia was found to be beneficial in reducing complications and stabilizing the haemodynamic profile in elderly patients undergoing open transthoracic oesophagectomy.
