Increasing the Density of Laboratory Measures for Machine Learning Applications

Vida Abedi et al.

Summary: The study analyzed laboratory measures from Geisinger's EHR on three distinct patient cohorts- those tested for Clostridioides difficile (Cdiff) infection, patients diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and patients diagnosed with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA). An adaptive imputation strategy based on patients' clinical profiles improved imputation of missing laboratory values, especially when laboratory codes with high levels of missingness were included. The results showed significant improvement in prediction accuracy when using the adaptive imputation strategy compared to traditional imputation methods.

Trends in ischemic stroke outcomes in a rural population in the United States

Durgesh Chaudhary et al.

Summary: The study found that while the all-cause mortality rate has decreased in ischemic stroke patients from rural areas in the United States, the stroke recurrence rate has significantly increased. Factors independently associated with mortality include older age, atrial fibrillation or flutter, heart failure, and prior ischemic stroke, while diabetes, chronic kidney disease, and age less than 65 years were predictors of ischemic stroke recurrence.

Polygenic Risk Scores Augment Stroke Subtyping

Summary: The study found that PRS derived from MEGASTROKE can be used to identify risk factors and determine stroke subtypes, with PRSLAS, PRSCES, and PRSSVS from common variants providing the best fit for modeling.
