Plasmodium oocysts respond with dormancy to crowding and nutritional stress

Tibebu Habtewold et al.

Summary: The study found that as infection intensities increase in mosquitoes infected with malaria parasites, the growth and maturation rates of oocysts decrease, but can be fully restored by providing additional bloodmeals. High infection intensities and starvation conditions affect the RNA Polymerase III activity in oocysts, and oocysts respond to crowding and nutritional stress with a dormancy-like strategy.
