Enhancement of Curcumin Solubility Using a Novel Solubilizing Polymer Soluplus(R)

F. Al-Akayleh et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel excipient Soluplus(R) was investigated to enhance the solubility and dissolution rate of the poorly water soluble drug Curcumin. Various methods were used to prepare Curcumin-Soluplus(R) mixtures, and the solid dispersion method showed the best enhancement effect. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy were employed for characterization. The results demonstrated that Soluplus(R) significantly improved the solubility and in vitro release performance of Curcumin.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted hospitals and healthcare providers worldwide, increasing the risk of nosocomial transmission and outbreaks to non-COVID patients or residents, who are at the highest risk of mortality. Reports on nosocomial outbreaks of SARS-CoV-2 have shown variable attack rates of up to 60%, with high mortality. There is limited evidence on transmission dynamics and the role of healthcare workers in initiating or amplifying nosocomial outbreaks, but there has been a shift towards expanded testing criteria for patients and healthcare workers, including asymptomatic individuals, which appears crucial in identifying and controlling outbreaks.

Optimization and modeling of microwave-assisted extraction of curcumin and antioxidant compounds from turmeric by using natural deep eutectic solvents

Khadija Doldolova et al.

Summary: Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have emerged as new green solvents for foods, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals due to their unique solvation power and low toxicity. The microwave assisted extraction method (MAE) was optimized using response surface methodology to obtain maximum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and curcumin contents (CC) in extracts for each NADES, showing higher TAC and CC compared to conventional solvents. This proposed method is potentially efficient and sustainable for extracting antioxidants and curcumin from turmeric in pharmaceutical and food industries.
