Mechanical Recycling of Packaging Plastics: A Review

Zoe O. G. Schyns et al.

Summary: The current global plastics economy is linear, but transitioning to a circular economy is crucial for reducing environmental impacts through degradation, reuse, and recycling. Mechanical recycling plays a key role in a sustainable plastic economy, but challenges such as high costs, mechanical property degradation, and inconsistent product quality need to be addressed.

QCM nanocomposite gas sensors - Expanding the application of waterborne polymer composites based on graphene nanoribbon

Ana Trajcheva et al.

Summary: Graphene nanoribbons (GNR) are narrow strips of graphene in one dimensional morphology with extraordinary properties, owing to the large edges that offer numerous interfacial contact area to the polymer phase in the composite materials. By using dispersed media polymerization as a green synthesis method, waterborne polymer/GNR nanocomposites were produced for the first time. The nanocomposites showed strong mechanical and thermal reinforcement due to the lack of aggregation during structuring of GNRs within the polymer matrix and the established covalent bonding between the polymer and GNRs phases. Sensors based on these nanocomposites exhibited a large sensor response in a short time to low concentrations of toxic gases, with selectivity towards NH3 likely due to the interactions with the composite materials by joint Wan der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding.
