Summary: Preorganization is a key design principle in nature that allows for synergistic pathways to be expressed. The design of materials with chelating groups populated adjacently in a spatially locked manner results in exceptional extraction efficiencies, as demonstrated through uranium sequestration experiments. This new paradigm highlights the importance of manipulating spatial distribution to enhance functional cooperation in sorbent materials.
