Splenic artery loops: Potential splenic plexus stimulation sites for neuroimmunomodulatory-based anti-inflammatory therapy?

Cindy G. J. Cleypool et al.

Summary: The splenic plexus could be a potential neuroimmunomodulatory therapeutic target for anti-inflammatory effects, with splenic artery loops identified as suitable stimulation sites in humans. The dimensions of these loops allow for surgical intervention and electrode implantation, with significant sympathetic nerve tissue found in the dissected neurovascular bundles. This knowledge may contribute to the development of surgical techniques and neuroelectrode interface design.

Human-relevant near-organ neuromodulation of the immune via the nerve

Matteo Donega et al.

Summary: Neuroimmunomodulation by stimulating autonomic connections to the spleen has been proposed as a therapeutic strategy for inflammatory conditions. Comparison of splenic nerves in mice, rats, pigs, and humans revealed pigs as a suitable model. Stimulation of the splenic nerve in pigs showed modulation of immune responses and cardiovascular protection, with parameters and biomarkers applicable to humans.
