Oxidized demethylated lignin as a bio-based adhesive for wood bonding

Summary: In this study, lignin was modified into a bio-based wood adhesive through demethylation and periodate oxidation, with the resulting adhesive characterized using various analytical methods. It was found that the addition of oxidant improved the bonding performance of lignin-based adhesives, with the optimal formulation being a 20% addition of NaIO4.

Enhancing the performance of low molar ratio urea-formaldehyde resin adhesives via in-situ modification with intercalated nanoclay

Summary: This study aimed to enhance the performance of low molar ratio UF resins by in-situ modification with ODA-BNT nanoclay. The modified UF resins showed better reactivity and lower activation energy, resulting in improved adhesion strength and lower formaldehyde emission compared to neat resins. The intercalation of ODA-BNT in low molar ratio UF resins improved their cohesion by forming a larger branched network in their cured state.

Characteristics of beech bark and its effect on properties of UF adhesive and on bonding strength and formaldehyde emission of plywood panels

Summary: The study found that beech bark can effectively reduce formaldehyde emissions and improve bonding strength in plywood manufacturing. Adding 5 wt% bark resulted in the highest formaldehyde absorption and best bonding strength. Additionally, plywood panels with all investigated bark concentrations met the requirements of the EN 314-2 standard for bonding strength.

Assessment of soybean protein-based adhesive formulations, prepared by different liquefaction technologies for particleboard applications

Summary: This study explored different liquefaction technologies for soybean protein and investigated the properties of the liquefied products as well as the effects of soybean protein-based adhesives prepared with different liquefaction methods. The results showed that a specific liquefied product could meet the requirements of particleboard industrial production. By using appropriate liquefaction methods and cross-linker, high-performance adhesives can be prepared to meet industrial standards.

In-situ modification of low molar ratio urea-formaldehyde resins with cellulose nanofibrils for plywood

Summary: The study demonstrated that in-situ modified UF resins with CNFs showed superior performance compared to neat UF resins, with shorter gelation time, faster curing rates, higher TSS, and lower FE values. UF resins modified with CNFs synthesized using Synth 2 exhibited better performance than Synth 1.

Eco-Friendly Fiberboard Panels from Recycled Fibers Bonded with Calcium Lignosulfonate

Summary: The study investigated the potential of using residual softwood fibers from the pulp and paper industry to produce eco-friendly, zero-formaldehyde fiberboard panels, bonded with a lignin-based, formaldehyde-free adhesive. The fiberboards produced had close-to-zero formaldehyde content but exhibited some drawbacks in moisture-related properties.

Natural Tannins as New Cross-Linking Materials for Soy-Based Adhesives

Summary: Research has been conducted on using three types of natural tannins (quebracho, mimosa and chestnut tannins) as cross-linking materials for soy adhesive. It was found that at ambient temperature, both ionic and covalent bonds formed between tannin constituents and amino acids, with covalent bonds predominating at higher temperatures. The addition of tannins to the soy adhesive formulation increased the modulus of elasticity (MOE) and the chemical bond formation was confirmed by MALDI-ToF-MS.
