Green rust functionalized geopolymer of composite cementitious materials and its application on treating chromate in a holistic system

Tao Huang et al.

Summary: Green rust functionalized geopolymer of composite cementitious materials (GR-CCM) has strong chromium adsorption capacity in acidic conditions, with amorphousness weakening the crystallinity of composite cementitious materials to enhance adsorption capacity and solidification process. The mixed-valent iron species in GR-CCM not only engages in the adsorption and reduction of chromate, but also strengthens the solidification of Cr species for potential heavy metal contamination treatment.

Effect of hexavalent chromium on the environment and removal techniques: A review

Kingsley Eghonghon Ukhurebor et al.

Summary: Chromium is an important element in anthropogenic activities, but its environmental pollution is now a major concern. While Cr(0) and Cr(III) are vital trace elements for growth, Cr(VI) is toxic to living organisms. Its accumulation could pose a potential threat to plants and animals.

Biomanagement of hexavalent chromium: Current trends and promising perspectives

Pooja Singh et al.

Summary: Chromium is a widely used heavy metal in industrial sectors, leading to large volumes of toxic industrial wastewaters being discharged into the environment without proper treatment. Biological approaches have shown great potential for chromium removal, including the use of various agro-based waste for adsorption, microbial groups for reduction/precipitation, and emerging agents like biosurfactants for enhanced metal bioremediation. The safe removal and recovery of chromium from wastes is crucial for achieving social, economic, and environmental sustainability as chromium is a non-renewable resource.
