Chemical composition of fine organic aerosols during a moderate pollution event in summertime in Beijing: Combined effect of primary emission and secondary formation

Yan Qin Ren et al.

Summary: The study shows that primary emission and secondary formation have significant impacts on the organic compositions of fine aerosols in summer Beijing. Coal combustion is an important source of OC during polluted period, while biomass burning is the main contributor during clean period. The study also highlights the importance of atmospheric oxidants and particle acidity in the formation of secondary organic carbon during high pollution periods in Beijing.

Source contributions to multiple toxic potentials of atmospheric organic aerosols

Akihiro Fushimi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated source contributions to the toxic potentials of organic aerosols in the atmosphere by conducting chemical and biological assays, revealing significant differences in contributions among sources. Urban and roadside samples showed stronger toxic potentials per organic carbon, while remote samples in summer had weaker toxic potentials, indicating that atmospheric aging decreased toxicity. Samples from forest and biogenic secondary organic aerosols exhibited relatively low toxic potentials, suggesting lower toxicity of biogenic particles.
