Antioxidative capacities of stilbenoid Suaveolensone A and Flavonoid Suaveolensone B: A detailed analysis of structural-electronic properties and mechanisms

Ninh The Son et al.

Summary: The study identifies the antioxidative capabilities of two previously undescribed compounds, stilbenoid suaveolensone A and flavonoid suaveolensone B, using DFT computational method. Both compounds exhibit antioxidative actions due to OH bond disruption, with flavonoid 2 showing better performance in antioxidative treatment compared to stilbenoid 1.

Steroid Glycosides Hyrcanoside and Deglucohyrcanoside: On Isolation, Structural Identification, and Anticancer Activity

Silvie Rimpelova et al.

Summary: Cardiac glycosides (CGs) are a diverse group of natural compounds, with most being potent inhibitors of Na+/K+-ATPase used in treating cardiac conditions. Some lesser known CGs may have anticancer potential, but currently used CGs have limitations in cancer treatment. This study focused on two poorly described CGs, hyrcanoside and deglucohyrcanoside, with the hope of them serving as research tools and novel cancer therapeutics.

Na+/K+-ATPase Revisited: On Its Mechanism of Action, Role in Cancer, and Activity Modulation

Jiri Bejcek et al.

Summary: The enzyme responsible for maintaining Na+ and K+ gradients across cell plasma membrane, sodium-potassium ATPase (NKA), is being studied as a potential anticancer target. Many NKA inhibitors from the family of cardiac steroids (CSs) have been reported and some are showing promising results in triggering cancer cell death. This article discusses the structure, mechanism of action, and inhibitors of NKA, highlighting their potential in cancer therapy and understanding NKA regulation.

Cardiac Glycosides as Immune System Modulators

Jan Skubnik et al.

Summary: Cardiac glycosides have shown potential not just in treating cardiac diseases, but also as anticancer agents. They induce multiple signaling pathways to inhibit tumor growth, interact with immune cell death mechanisms, and modulate immune response genes, suggesting a wide range of potential applications in treating autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

The scaffold-forming steps of plant alkaloid biosynthesis

Benjamin R. Lichman

Summary: Alkaloids from plants, known for their structural diversity and bioactivity, hold a privileged position in both modern and traditional medicines. Recent research has made significant progress in elucidating the biosynthetic origins of plant alkaloids. This review focuses on the metabolic origins of true alkaloids, specialized metabolites derived from amino acids with a nitrogen heterocycle, highlighting the key roles played by modifications to primary metabolism, iminium reactivity, and spontaneous reactions in the molecular and evolutionary origins of these pathways.
