Wildfire Damage Assessment over Australia Using Sentinel-2 Imagery and MODIS Land Cover Product within the Google Earth Engine Cloud Platform

Seyd Teymoor Seydi et al.

Summary: Wildfires are significant natural disasters that have a negative impact on human safety, natural ecosystems, and wildlife. Remote Sensing (RS) images are valuable resources for timely and accurate estimation of wildfire burn areas due to their wide coverage, high spatial and temporal resolution, and low cost. In this study, an estimation framework based on change analysis using Sentinel-2 imagery and MODIS products within the Google Earth Engine platform was implemented to detect and measure burned areas in Australia with high accuracy.

Fusing simulated GEDI, ICESat-2 and NISAR data for regional aboveground biomass mapping

Carlos Alberto Silva et al.

Summary: This study presents a multi-sensor data fusion approach for accurate mapping of forest aboveground biomass (AGB) using data from GEDI, ICESat-2, and NISAR missions. Testing in Sonoma County, USA, demonstrates that the fusion framework provides more accurate AGB estimates compared to individual mission data, highlighting opportunities for improved AGB mapping through data fusion.

Monitoring Key Forest Structure Attributes across the Conterminous United States by Integrating GEDI LiDAR Measurements and VIIRS Data

Khaldoun Rishmawi et al.

Summary: Accurate information on global forest distribution and 3D structure is crucial for assessing forest biomass stocks and future terrestrial Carbon sink projections. The GEDI LiDAR sensor provides unprecedented sampling of forest structural properties, with VIIRS data successfully extrapolating GEDI measurements for wall-to-wall forest structure maps in the conterminous US. Validation results demonstrate the robustness of the VIIRS data for monitoring forest structural changes over large areas.

Signal Photon Extraction Method for Weak Beam Data of ICESat-2 Using Information Provided by Strong Beam Data in Mountainous Areas

Zhiyu Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an effective algorithm to extract signal photons from weak beam data of ICESat-2 in mountainous areas by utilizing strong beam data and the relationship between along-track slope and noise level. Through this method, a higher detection rate of signal photons is achieved, improving the overall performance compared to other algorithms. The algorithm shows potential in assessing elevation accuracy achieved by ICESat-2, estimating along-track and cross-track slope, and obtaining ground control points for stereo-mapping satellites in mountainous regions.
