Biomass transport for energy: Cost, energy and CO2 performance of forest wood and manure transport chains in Switzerland

Vivienne Schnorf et al.

Summary: The main barrier to biomass transport in Switzerland is cost rather than energy or emissions performance. Transport of forest wood is more efficient than transport of manure.

Practical strategies to improve harvestable biomass energy yield in microalgal culture: A review

Nima Hajinajaf et al.

Summary: Research on renewable energy is a key challenge in this century due to increasing energy demand and environmental issues associated with fossil fuel consumption. Microalgae have received renewed attention as a potential feedstock for biofuel production, but the high cost of large-scale cultivation systems currently limits economic viability. This study aims to review factors influencing harvestable biomass energy yield in microalgal cultures, particularly those fed with wastewater, and discuss practical strategies to promote low-cost energy production. It is concluded that among the five practical strategies considered, CO2 addition and algal recycling have the greatest impact on enhancing harvestable biomass energy yield.

Eco-Friendly Fiberboard Panels from Recycled Fibers Bonded with Calcium Lignosulfonate

Petar Antov et al.

Summary: The study investigated the potential of using residual softwood fibers from the pulp and paper industry to produce eco-friendly, zero-formaldehyde fiberboard panels, bonded with a lignin-based, formaldehyde-free adhesive. The fiberboards produced had close-to-zero formaldehyde content but exhibited some drawbacks in moisture-related properties.
