Microplastics in the environment: Occurrence, perils, and eradication

Surbhi Sharma et al.

Summary: Microplastics, with sizes smaller than 5 mm, are a major source of environmental pollution and pose hazards to marine species, birds, animals, soil creatures, and humans. This review discusses the damaging effects of microplastics on the environment and various removal techniques such as biodegradation, adsorption, and catalytic degradation. Advancements in methods like FTIR and SEM analysis are highlighted for monitoring structural changes during degradation processes.

Microplastic degradation by hydroxy-rich bismuth oxychloride

Runren Jiang et al.

Summary: A novel hydroxy-rich ultrathin BiOCl-X was prepared and showed strong potential for photocatalytic degradation of microplastics at room temperature. Photocatalytic mechanism studies revealed that surface hydroxyl groups of BiOCl can enhance the production of hydroxyl radicals, boosting degradation performance. This work provides new insights into the importance of surface hydroxyl groups in the photocatalytic degradation of microplastics.

Effects of exposure of polyethylene microplastics to air, water and soil on their adsorption behaviors for copper and tetracycline

Yuan Wang et al.

Summary: The adsorption behaviors of Cu(II) and tetracycline (TC) on polyethylene microplastics exposed to different environments varied, with marine- and soil-exposed microplastics showing higher adsorption and stabilization capacities. The adsorption isotherms were better described by Langmuir model for water- and soil-exposed microplastics, while kinetic experiments revealed differing intra-particle diffusion effects. Additionally, the glycosyl composition and density functional theory analysis suggested that biofilm components and metal-antibiotic complexes played a role in the adsorption process.

Degradation of primary nanoplastics by photocatalysis using different anodized TiO2 structures

Laura Patricia Dominguez-Jaimes et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution has become a pressing environmental concern, with the release of nano-sized plastics raising alarm due to potential adverse effects. This study explores photocatalysis as an alternative for removing polystyrene nanoparticles from water, showing that TiO2/T and TiO2/M photocatalysts are more efficient in eliminating PS-NPs compared to photolysis. The mixed nanostructures demonstrated a twofold increase in efficiency in reducing PS-NP concentration compared to UV light photolysis.
