ZnO nanoparticle-grafted PLA thermoplastic composites for 3D printing applications: Tuning of thermal, mechanical, morphological and shape memory effect

Ranvijay Kumar et al.

Summary: Zinc oxide-grafted polymers have shown great potential for 3D printed biosensors due to their antibacterial properties, magnetic behavior, crystallinity, thermal conductivity, and binding energy. This study investigated the fabrication of feedstock filaments using ZnO nanoparticles grafted with polylactic acid (PLA). The results showed that incorporating ZnO in PLA led to the formation of responsive and mechanically strong composites with shape memory effects, making it a suitable candidate for 3D printing applications.

Statistical models for the mechanical properties of 3D printed external medical aids

Rafael Moreno et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the mechanical properties of two biocompatible materials (ABS medical and PLActive) through 3D-printed specimens and modeled the influence of various printing parameters on three response variables. The developed statistical models can help optimize the mechanical response of external medical aids by selecting printing parameters such as infill density, raster angle, and layer height.

Investigation of the Shape-Memory Properties of 3D Printed PLA Structures with Different Infills

Guido Ehrmann et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the shape-memory properties of PLA cubes with different infill patterns and percentages, along with exploring its material response under defined quasi-static load and the possibility of restoring the original 3D printed shape. The importance of carefully designing infill patterns to develop samples with desired mechanical properties is underlined by the results presented in this study.

4D Printing of Origami Structures for Minimally Invasive Surgeries Using Functional Scaffold

Thomas Langford et al.

Summary: This short communication introduces the proof of concept of merging origami and 4D printing technologies to develop minimally invasive delivery of functional biomedical scaffolds with high shape recovery. The results showed that the 4D printed herringbone tessellation origami exhibited a significant 96% recovery rate compared to the PLA filament's 61%, proving the potential of applying 4D printing of origami structures to biomedical scaffolds.

3D printing of shape memory polymers

Guido Ehrmann et al.

Summary: Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are a type of polymers that can ''remember'' their original shape and return to it after deformation with an external stimulus. Some SMPs can be 3D printed, offering a wide range of potential applications.
