Shifts in alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic: early indications from Australia

Summary: This study found that harmful alcohol consumption decreased among younger drinkers, particularly young women, in Australia following the implementation of COVID-19 pandemic responses such as closure of licensed premises and social distancing measures. Drinkers experiencing high levels of stress showed a relatively higher shift in harmful consumption compared to those with low stress levels.

Alcohol Use during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Self-Reported Changes and Motives for Change

Summary: The study in Norway found that after the implementation of COVID-19 restrictions, nearly one third of Norwegians reported drinking less, while 13.3% reported drinking more. Females, younger respondents, and residents of Oslo were more likely to report changes in alcohol consumption. Past year alcohol use was associated with both decreased and increased drinking behaviors.
