Vittel as a model case in PES discourse: Review and critical perspective

Logan Robert Bingham

Summary: The Vittel case is often cited as a model in discussions on user-financed payments for ecosystem services (PES), though criticisms are lacking. A review of recent PES articles referencing Vittel found that most articles only refer to positive aspects, neglecting limitations. The paper challenges the ideal framing of the Vittel scheme and points out the influence of well-resourced actors on negotiations, as well as potential limitations in Coasean bargaining.

The cost-effectiveness of conservation auctions in the presence of asset specificity: An agent-based model

Elsa Cardona Santos et al.

Summary: Payments for Environmental Services serve as a financial incentive for land users to protect and restore ecosystems. The challenges in maximizing cost-effectiveness include dealing with asymmetric information and asset specificity. While auctions can help reduce informational rents, repeated auctions may worsen cost-effectiveness due to bidders' ability to learn and adapt their strategies. Social interaction plays a key role in providing information, building trust, and potentially reducing contracting costs.
