Pre-season fire management planning: the use of Potential Operational Delineations to prepare for wildland fire events

S. Michelle Greiner et al.

Summary: US fire scientists are developing Potential Wildfire Operational Delineations (PODs) as a planning tool to promote safe and effective wildland fire response, strengthening risk management and aligning fire management objectives. Interviews with personnel on national forests show that PODs offer a promising shift in wildfire management by facilitating proactive communication and coordination. Successful use of PODs will require leadership commitment, stakeholder engagement, and interdisciplinary staff involvement.
