Emerging infectious disease: An underappreciated area of strategic concern for food security

Daniel R. Brooks et al.

Summary: Emerging infectious diseases pose a threat to global food security and public health, with rising treatment costs and production losses. The coevolution between pathogens and hosts leads to the emergence of new diseases, while factors like global climate change and globalization contribute to the frequent occurrence of EIDs. Adopting proactive measures to anticipate and mitigate the impacts of emerging infectious diseases is crucial in addressing this global challenge.

Evolutionary Diversification in Insect Vector-Phytoplasma-Plant Associations

V Trivellone et al.

Summary: The association between insect herbivores and vascular plants plays a crucial role in terrestrial evolution, with microbes playing important roles in mediating these interactions. The study of plant-pathogenic bacteria and their insect vectors provides a new model for understanding how distantly related but ecologically associated groups of organisms can drive evolutionary diversification. The research highlights the functional ecology and phylogenetic components of these associations, shedding light on the evolutionary diversification of the system.

The agent associated with blue dwarf disease in wheat represents a new phytoplasma taxon, 'Candidatus Phytoplasma tritici'

Yan Zhao et al.

Summary: WBD phytoplasma, as a novel taxon, has unique transmission vector (Psammotettix striatus) and distinctive symptoms in its predominant host (wheat). Ecological, molecular, and genomic evidence justifies the significant divergence of WBD phytoplasma from Ca. P. asteris.

New species of Mayawa Fletcher and description of a related new Australian leafhopper genus (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae: Paralimnini)

Christopher H. Dietrich

Summary: Five new species of the endemic Australian leafhopper genus Mayawa Fletcher, 2000 (M. affinifacialis sp. nov., M. bimaculata sp. nov., M. brevicephala sp. nov., M. kathyae sp. nov. and M. vestigia sp. nov.) are described and illustrated, along with a revised key to species. Additionally, a previously unknown strain of phytoplasma belonging to the 16SrV group was identified in one of the new species. A new related genus, Austroauridius gen. nov. based on A. iwaii sp. nov., was also described and illustrated with a key to known genera of Australian Paralimnini provided.

Identification of Phytoplasmas Representing Multiple New Genetic Lineages from Phloem-Feeding Leafhoppers Highlights the Diversity of Phytoplasmas and Their Potential Vectors

Wei Wei et al.

Summary: This study identified new phytoplasma strains that represent new genetic subgroups and extend previously undiscovered geographical distributions. Additionally, it was found that certain leafhoppers can harbor phytoplasmas, expanding our understanding of phytoplasmas. Further research on transmission trials and screening of potential host plants and weed reservoirs will help improve our knowledge of phytoplasma transmission and epidemiology.
