Crystallization-induced mechanofluorescence for visualization of polymer crystallization

Sota Kato et al.

Summary: By introducing tetraarylsuccinonitrile (TASN) into crystalline polymers, researchers were able to visualize and evaluate the stress caused by micro-mechanical forces during polymer crystallization using fluorescence microscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance. This study provides a new method for studying residual stress in polymeric materials.

Postmodification of Polymer Networks via the Freezing-Induced Generation of Radicals

Sota Kato et al.

Summary: In polymer reactions triggered by freezing, pink radicals with yellow fluorescence generated by the cleavage of TASN act as both reactive species and indicators of radical generation. The mechanical stress experienced by TASN moieties in the polymer network's cross-linkers due to solvent freezing leads to the homolytic cleavage of TASN moieties, forming carbon-centered radicals that react with vinyl monomers. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements show that the amount of radicals remains constant, indicating a consistent reaction field.
