Mobility Reduction in the Flow of an Elastic Microcapsule through a Constricted Channel

Summary: The study analyzed the flow characteristics of suspended capsules passing through a planar constricted channel and described the flow of inner and continuous liquid phases using the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The fluid-structure interaction problem was solved using finite element and immersed boundary methods, revealing a reduction in the mobility of the flow.

Analysis of the force-displacement relationship under uniaxial compression emphasized the importance of determining the precise compressive contact point. Two models were presented to describe the data, with the new model showing the advantage of providing an overall modulus for the capsule as well as the modulus of shell material.
