Macroglial diversity: white and grey areas and relevance to remyelination

Inge L. Werkman et al.

Summary: Macroglial cells, including astrocytes and oligodendroglial lineage cells, exhibit regional diversity in both functional and morphological aspects, forming distinct populations in different regions of the central nervous system. Advances in single-cell and single-nucleus RNA sequencing technologies have provided new insights into regional heterogeneity at the transcriptional level. Regional differences in remyelination capacity between grey and white matter areas have been observed, with potential implications for diseases like multiple sclerosis and therapeutic interventions targeting endogenous remyelination.

Schwann cell remyelination of the central nervous system: why does it happen and what are the benefits?

Civia Z. Chen et al.

Summary: Myelin sheaths are crucial for neuronal function by supporting axonal integrity and rapid impulse conduction. In response to demyelinating injuries in the CNS, OPCs can undergo remyelination. OPCs might be a major source of CNS-resident SCs, which could be an attractive target for promoting endogenous remyelination.
