PhytophthoraSpecies Associated with Roots of Native and Non-native Trees in Natural and Managed Forests

Tanay Bose et al.

Summary: Roots act as a biological filter allowing only a portion of soil-associated microbial diversity to infect plants, including both beneficial and detrimental organisms. The diversity and richness of Phytophthora species associated with roots were influenced by the soil origin and the root-soil interaction. Results showed a previously undetected diversity of Phytophthora species from South Africa, with significantly different species richness and composition between field root and soil samples.

Diversity of Phytophthora Species Detected in Disturbed and Undisturbed British Soils Using High-Throughput Sequencing Targeting ITS rRNA and COI mtDNA Regions

Blanca B. Landa et al.

Summary: Research has shown the presence of various Phytophthora species in different sites in the UK, some of which are significant pathogens threatening forest trees. These species are more commonly found in disturbed sites. Further investigation is needed to determine if these Phytophthora species pose a threat to British trees and to develop appropriate control measures.

Phytophthora theobromicola sp. nov.: A New Species Causing Black Pod Disease on Cacao in Brazil

Jennifer Decloquement et al.

Summary: Black pod disease caused by Phytophthora species is a major concern for cacao production in Brazil, with high incidence levels reported. A study in Brazil identified a new species, Phytophthora theobromicola, associated with black pod disease on cacao, which showed distinct characteristics from other known Phytophthora species. Additionally, findings from pathogenicity tests showed significant variability in disease development among different Phytophthora species, highlighting the importance of disease control strategies and genetic resistance in cacao plants.
