The study experimented on depositing multilayer films on the surface of medical devices to suppress platelet and protein adhesion. The results show that the multilayer can successfully form on materials such as polytetrafluoroethylene and have inhibitory effects.
The study focuses on platelet and protein adhesion on medical devices, which are the main factors leading to thrombus formation. The goal was to suppress their adhesion by depositing an elastic multilayer onto the hydrophobic surface of the artificial object. Here the amount of protein was evaluated using QCM; the amount of adsorbed protein tended to decrease with increasing the wettability of multilayer. Moreover, the multilayer was confirmed to form on polytetrafluoroethylene, which is used as artificial blood vessels, and inhibited platelet adhesion. Enhanced flexibility of the membrane by addition of elastin was confirmed by surface observations in a liquid during a needle-penetration test. The results demonstrate the possibility of coating biomedical multilayer films onto the surface of medical devices.
