Oxygen and development of the human placenta

Graham J. Burton et al.

Summary: Development of the human placenta occurs in varying oxygen concentrations throughout gestation, with early placenta considered "hypoxic" despite heavy glycolytic metabolism. Trophoblast proliferation is promoted by the low-oxygen environment, leading to formation of the cytotrophoblastic shell. Complications such as pre-eclampsia may be related to oxidative stress and malperfusion, requiring further research on oxygen regulation of placental development.

A 3-dimensional microfluidic platform for modeling human extravillous trophoblast invasion and toxicological screening

Yong Pu et al.

Summary: Placental trophoblast cell invasion into the maternal uterus is a crucial and complex event in the formation of the maternal-fetal interface. A 3D PDMS microfluidic platform has been developed to accurately evaluate trophoblast invasion, allowing for real-time monitoring, imaging, and collection of invasive cells. This platform provides insights into pathways regulating trophoblast invasion and is useful for toxicological screening.
