Donor sex, age and ethnicity impact stored red blood cell antioxidant metabolism through mechanisms in part explained by glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase levels and activity

Angelo D. Alessandro et al.

Summary: Storage of red blood cells in the blood bank leads to metabolic alterations that affect their ability to resist oxidative stress, with donor characteristics such as sex, age, ethnicity, additive solution type, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase status influencing the metabolism and susceptibility to hemolysis of stored erythrocytes following oxidative insults. Metabolomic markers of hemolysis and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency were identified, revealing dysregulation in detoxification pathways of oxidized lipids in extreme oxidative hemolysis.
