Biochar affects taxonomic and functional community composition of protists

Rasit Asiloglu et al.

Summary: This study found that the application of biochar to soil resulted in an increase in the relative abundance of Stramenopiles, mainly oomycetes, in the rice husk biochar amendment, while the poultry litter biochar increased the relative abundances of Amoebozoa, Alveolata, and Excavata. Additionally, among functional groups, the poultry litter biochar increased the relative abundance of phagotrophic protists, while the relative abundance of plant pathogens was decreased by both the rice husk and poultry litter biochar amendments.

Effect of protists on rhizobacterial community composition and rice plant growth in a biochar amended soil

Rasit Asiloglu et al.

Summary: The study found that the presence of protists and the application of biochar (PL and RH) significantly impacted the soil bacterial community and bacterial genes involved in N-cycling, with protists and PL amendments increasing the abundance of certain bacterial genes. Additionally, rice plant growth and N uptake were higher in the presence of protists and PL amendments. This suggests a new insight into the effects of biochar on the bacterial community via altering trophic interactions.
