Development of a toxicophenomic index for trace element ecotoxicity tests using the halophyte Juncus acutus: Juncus-TOX

Bernardo Duarte et al.

Summary: This study focused on Juncus acutus and utilized pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry derived variables to develop an integrated biomarker response index (JuncusTOX) for classifying trace element contamination exposure in seedlings. The results showed that the JuncusTOX can be an efficient tool for ecotoxicological assays, highlighting the potential use of this species as a future halophyte model species for ecotoxicology.

A multivariate approach to chlorophyll a fluorescence data for trace element ecotoxicological trials using a model marine diatom

Bernardo Duarte et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the use of LIF and PAM as efficient non-invasive techniques for evaluating the effects of exposure to trace elements on marine diatoms. Both techniques showed good classification efficiencies in distinguishing physiological changes induced by different doses of trace elements.

Environmental risk assessment and bioaccumulation of pharmaceuticals in a large urbanized estuary

Vanessa F. Fonseca et al.

Summary: The study found multiple pharmaceutical residues in surface waters of the Tejo estuary, with antibiotics and angiotensin II receptor blockers posing high ecological risks, while antidepressants, antiepileptics, anxiolytics and beta-blockers presented moderate risks. In biota, higher risk pharmaceuticals were detected in higher concentrations, indicating species-and compound-specific bioaccumulation.
