Nanoparticle-based amelioration of drought stress and cadmium toxicity in rice via triggering the stress responsive genetic mechanisms and nutrient acquisition

Temoor Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mitigation strategy of cadmium and drought stresses on rice plants by using iron oxide and hydrogel nanoparticles simultaneously for the first time. The results showed that nanoparticle-treated rice plants exhibited increased biomass, antioxidant enzyme contents, photosynthesis efficiency, and nutrient acquisition while decreasing reactive oxygen species and Cd translocation. Furthermore, the expression of Cd transporter genes was suppressed in nanoparticle-treated rice plants under normal and drought stress conditions, indicating the potential of nanoparticles in alleviating heavy metal pollution and water scarcity challenges faced by farmers worldwide.
