Removal of pharmaceuticals from wastewater of health care facilities

Daniele Mousel et al.

Summary: Health care facilities can be point sources of pharmaceutical residues in public sewer systems. This study found that combining biological treatment with further processes such as activated carbon adsorption, ozonation and advanced oxidation can effectively remove pharmaceutical residues from wastewater in nursing homes, orthopaedic clinics, and psychiatric clinics. The results demonstrate the general suitability of these treatment methods for eliminating pharmaceutical residues, with the advanced oxidation process showing the highest energy demand.

Rapid determination of pharmaceuticals inwastewater by direct infusion HRMS using target and suspect screening analysis

Ingus Perkons et al.

Summary: The study successfully detected APIs and their transformation products in wastewater using high-resolution mass spectrometry, with the most frequently detected compounds being anti-inflammatory drugs, beta-blockers, and antihypertensive drugs, as well as their metabolites. The results of the study were consistent with national consumption statistics and the origins of wastewater samples.

Occurrence and removal of chemicals of emerging concern in wastewater treatment plants and their impact on receiving water systems

Oksana Golovko et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants are major sources of Emerging Chemicals of Concern (CECs) in aquatic environments, impacting aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated 164 CECs at 15 locations, with CEC concentrations varying widely between WWTPs. The K-d of CECs correlated with K-ow, allowing for prediction of their distribution in water and solids. WWTP effluent had higher CEC concentrations than upstream waters, potentially impacting downstream ecosystems.
