Unlocking the surge in demand for personal and protective equipment (PPE) and improvised face coverings arising from coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic - Implications for efficacy, re-use and sustainable waste management

Neil J. Rowan et al.

Summary: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 presents challenges in sustaining the supply chain for personal protective equipment. Effective measures to prevent COVID-19 transmission include mitigating aerosol transmission in healthcare settings and promoting proper face mask usage among the public. Future demand for PPE will be influenced by changes in medical practices.

Environmental impacts of COVID-19 on Victoria, Australia, witnessed two waves of Coronavirus

Mahdi Boroujeni et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic in Victoria had both positive and negative impacts on the environment, impacting mobility trends, traffic, air pollution, noise pollution, and waste generation. During the pandemic, there was a significant decrease in movements at public transport hubs, retail and recreation venues, and workplaces. While air quality improved with lower PM2.5 levels, the increase in daily generation of used face masks also contributed to waste generation.

Effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the resilient moduli and unconfined compressive strength of rubberized recycled concrete aggregate as pavement base/subbase

Mohammad Saberian et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the effects of freeze-thaw process on the engineering properties of recycled concrete aggregate containing crumb rubber for pavement base and subbase applications. The results indicate that the resilient modulus of the RCA/rubber blends subjected to freeze-thaw cycles is higher than that of the control samples, while the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of F-T samples is slightly lower. It is found that the UCS value of T-F samples is remarkably higher. Based on the preliminary findings, the blends of RCA and crumb rubber can be used for pavement base/subbase subjected to freeze-thaw cycles as a low carbon and cost-effective option.
