Summary: Water scarcity is a significant risk for meeting increasing food demand worldwide, particularly in agriculture. Identifying the driving forces behind water consumption in different regions is crucial for sustainable water resource management. The study in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region of China showed that per capita GDP was the main driver for total water footprints and virtual water flows, with differences in roles for each city.
