Is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Futile in Coronavirus Disease 2019 Patients Experiencing In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest?

Priyank Shah et al.

Summary: Limited data on outcomes of in-hospital cardiac arrest among COVID-19 patients in the United States led to this retrospective cohort study in rural Southwest Georgia. The study found that regardless of comorbidities, illness severity, or location of arrest, all COVID-19 patients who experienced in-hospital cardiac arrest had a 100% in-hospital mortality rate.

Cardiac arrest in older adult patients

Sharon Einav et al.

Summary: Elderly patients experiencing cardiac arrest present unique challenges in terms of survival factors and appropriate CPR attempts. Factors such as prearrest functional status, comorbidity load, specific age subsets within the elderly population, and CA location play a significant role in determining outcomes. Shared decision-making is crucial for appropriate CPR attempts in elderly patients, with the goal of achieving neurologically intact survival. Further research is needed to better understand the association between specific age subgroups, comorbidities, and functional status with neurologically intact survival in this population.

In-hospital cardiac arrest in patients with coronavirus 2019

Oscar J. L. Mitchell et al.

Summary: In patients with COVID-19, the 30-day survival rate of hospitalized patients with in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) is low, with only 22.3% achieving return of spontaneous circulation. There are substantial variations in survival rates among different hospitals, which may contribute to the overall poor outcomes seen in previous studies.
