Integration or Modularity in the Mandible of Canids (Carnivora: Canidae): a Geometric Morphometric Approach

Valentina Segura et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the mandibular shape of canids is influenced by ecological factors, especially in highly specialized taxa. Macroevolutionary patterns are more integrated than intraspecific patterns, indicating that correlational selection plays a significant role in the evolution of mandibular form and function. There is no evidence of an evolutionary line of least resistance in shaping mandible disparity.

Phylogenetically aligned component analysis

Michael L. Collyer et al.

Summary: Phylogenetically aligned component analysis (PACA) is a new ordination approach that aligns phenotypic data with phylogenetic signal, allowing visualization of trends in phylogenetic signal in multivariate data spaces. By maximizing variation in directions that describe phylogenetic signal, PACA can distinguish between weak and strong phylogenetic signals, providing a more precise description of the phylogenetic signal in studies focused on phylogenetic signal. Comparing PACA and Phy-PCA results can help determine the relative importance of phylogenetic and other signals in the data.

Weak genetic signal for phenotypic integration implicates developmental processes as major regulators of trait covariation

Andrew J. Conith et al.

Summary: The study examined the relationship between phenotypic integration and genetic basis, revealing widespread associations among traits at the phenotypic level, but few overlapping genetic regions through QTL analysis. The findings suggest developmental interactions may play a significant role in determining the degree of phenotypic integration among traits.
