Effect ofDichrostachys cinereaencroachment on plant species diversity, functional traits and litter decomposition in an East-African savannah ecosystem

Yonas Ugo Utaile et al.

Summary: The study found that the encroachment of D. cinerea led to a reorientation of community resource use towards a more acquisitive strategy. Although encroachment resulted in a slowing down of litter decomposition rates, there was an unexpected increase in herbaceous species diversity in sparsely invaded plots. Nonetheless, species composition underwent a significant shift following encroachment.

Summary: The study found significant differences in microbial composition and carbon and nitrogen content between soil surfaces beneath shrubs and in grass areas, which may promote shrub encroachment and explain why this phenomenon is often irreversible.
