Air bubbles play a role in shear thinning of non-colloidal suspensions

Yuan Lin et al.

Summary: The presence of bubbles in non-colloidal suspensions significantly affects the shear thinning behavior, with large bubbles enhancing shear thinning and nano-bubbles suppressing it. Additionally, nano-bubbles influence the particle organization behavior, leading to a larger critical strain for the finish of the organization process. Therefore, a degassing process is essential to obtain reliable rheological properties of the two-phase suspension system.

Study on strain stiffening of non-colloidal suspension in oscillating shear by a subsequent steady shear test

Anqi Zhang et al.

Summary: It has been found that non-colloidal suspensions exhibit strain stiffening under oscillatory shear conditions, with suspensions containing small particles showing larger moduli before the critical point. Experimental tests showed that samples stopped at the critical point and peak point during oscillatory tests displayed similar magnitudes of shear viscosity in subsequent steady shear tests. This suggests that a metastable structure exists in non-colloidal suspensions during strain stiffening, affecting modulus in oscillatory shear but not viscosity in steady shear.

Microstructure and rheology of shear-thickening colloidal suspensions with varying interparticle friction: Comparison of experiment with theory and simulation models

Yu-Fan Lee et al.

Summary: Two colloidal suspensions of paucidisperse, spherical silica particles with extreme limits of surface contact friction were studied to compare shear rheology and microstructure differences. The study found that shear-induced microstructures vary between suspensions with different levels of contact friction.
