Axion Emission Can Explain a New Hard X-Ray Excess from Nearby Isolated Neutron Stars

Summary: Axions may be produced thermally inside neutron stars and converted into X rays in magnetic fields, explaining the hard X-ray excess in some isolated neutron stars. These stars were previously expected to only emit flux in UV and soft X-ray bands, with no conventional astrophysical explanation for the observed hard X-ray excess at present.
