Temperature-Dependent Photochromic Performance of Yttrium Oxyhydride Thin Films

Elbruz Murat Baba et al.

Summary: Yttrium oxyhydride exhibits remarkable photochromic properties, showing photodarkening at temperatures as low as 5K and some bleaching in the 5-50K temperature range. As the temperature increases, a stepwise recovery of transmittance is observed, indicating that anion diffusion may not be the sole mechanism behind the photochromic behavior of YHO. Additional mechanisms, such as electronic charge transfer, likely contribute to the photochromism observed in YHO and other rare-earth-metal oxyhydrides.

Influence of Cation (RE = Sc, Y, Gd) and O/H Anion Ratio on the Photochromic Properties of REOxH3-2x Thin Films

Giorgio Colombi et al.

Summary: Rare-earth oxyhydride REOxH3-2x thin films exhibit a reversible photochromic effect at ambient conditions, with the extent of optical change and bleaching speed largely tunable by the O/H anion ratio and cation choice. Data suggests that oxyhydrides formed by REs with larger ionic radius have greater optical contrast and faster bleaching speed, indicating a possible dependency of the photochromic mechanism on anion site-hopping.
