A bicyclic pillar[5]arene derivative fused with a bipyridine side ring, named a molecular universal joint (MUJ), was synthesized and the pair of enantiomers was resolved using high-performance liquid chromatography. The electrochemiluminescent detection based on the ruthenium complex of enantiopure MUJ demonstrated excellent chiral discrimination towards certain amino acids.
